You Deserve To Get Paid

You Deserve To Get Paid

I have Pirate FM on while writing this and I’m currently listening to Money Money Money by Abba!

“I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay

Ain’t it sad?”

It does feel like you want to give up chasing payments sometimes doesn’t it?

Something inside you starts to wonder if you will ever get paid…

The fear is that if you hassle someone too much they will not want to stay working with you, right?…

I have to say, if this is you, there are a few things to think about:

A. You deserve to get paid for the WORK you’ve done. There is no grey area here, you have worked, you’ve given a service, you have provided. So do not start having doubts about your value, EVER…

B. If a client is not paying, you should ask yourself is that the type of client you really want to work with? I wouldn’t at all. You’re wasting precious time chasing payments when you could focus on more productive things for your business, like growing it…

Now let’s look at four tips on how to get paid:

1. Get a deposit paid before you lift a finger.

Personally I always now stipulate that a 50% deposit is required for me to commence work, on anything. This is key to setting up the correct expectation in your clients mind…

You don’t have to insist on 50% like me, but you really should get started with this as a business process, believe me it will help…

I often call this a “Project Commencement Fee”..

I don’t even recall a single client objecting to this..

The thing is:

It’s crystal clear for your client, the expectation is set…

I also think it makes you appear more professional…

You get taken more seriously…

Your cash flow improves…

You will not be so out of pocket if they delay later..

I make exceptions when I have an existing customer who I know will pay, you can do this on personal basis…

BUT, I do make this a business process for all new customers…

Additionally, always firm up a payment schedule, a deadline when payment is due.

2. What’s the reason for the delay?

Communication is key, swift communication. Get on the phone and ask the customer if there is a problem, either with the service or their payment settlement…ask when you can expect it to be paid…

You can simply be honest “hello, is everything OK with the work, I’m wondering if there is an issue as I have not received payment yet”.

This usually does the trick, as often they are just so busy they shelve it and forget it..

3. Keep asking, often

The worst ting you can do is to stop asking, as some customers hope that is exactly what you will do. Don’t, stay on it. Set up a reminder in your calendar to prompt you. In fact in my own businesses I have automated invoicing software which fires out late payment reminders. Consider that for yourself, it saves me from doing anything…

A personal line does help too, perhaps a txt message…

4. Get more serious

You’ve tried the nice approach, it hasn’t worked, you’ve been considerate, and now it’s time to think about a solicitor. You will find a stern letter from a mediator or solicitor will often do the trick, and they are not that much money to get one prepared. I can recommend a good mediator if required…

You can come to arrangement on a monthly payment plan if this is the only way the customer can pay, again the mediator can help here very well…

If this is still not happening it is time for the small claims court, this is the last resort and usually avoided with the stern letter…

Don’t give up, and don’t shy away from being paid for your services, it’s never your fault…

Recording An Audio Book

Recording An Audio Book

This is a picture of the individual files of my audio book…

The recording took several hours to capture, reading a book aloud and recording it with headphones on really focuses the mind on the pronunciation…

The hardware I use is a TASCAM DR-40 audio recorder, with an MXL 990 microphone…

Here’s the TASCAM..

And here is the Microphone…

That combination is fabulous, you’ll capture a wonderful studio quality audio recording…

For the editing I use Reaper software, which is a very cost effective multi-track audio editing solution…

I’ve used a noise gate plug-in and an audio compressor to even out the levels of my voice…

I’m now adding the audio book to my Academy Membership area for my paying clients.

Watch Me Build A Sales Funnel In 10 minutes!

Watch Me Build A Sales Funnel In 10 minutes!

Did you know that it costs McDonalds $1.91 in advertising to get you into the drive through…?

And when they sell you a burger for $2.09… they ONLY make $0.18… 🙁

But… when they upsell you fries and a coke for $1.77 more… they make (and more importantly keep $1.32 profit)…

Yes, 8 times the profit of the initial sale!

Pretty cool, don’t you think?

But… what does that have to do with you?

Well, If you’re like most people who sell stuff online…

You setup a website, and you started selling your product…

But just like McDonalds… even if people are buying it…

After your advertising costs, you’re probably not left with enough to even cover your hosting bills. 🙁

And that’s when you realize… that if you want to make it online, you can’t sell from a flat website…

You need to do what McDonalds did, and setup a sales funnel…

But instead of having people go through a drive-in window…

Online they go through a “capture page” where you can gather their contact information and follow up with them through email…

Then instead of selling them a burger, you have a sales page created to sell your initial product…

And while you’re probably not going to offer your customers fries and a coke…

You could upsell them on your other products and services.

This is what we call a “Sales Funnel”

Where website visitors can come in the top…

And cash comes out the bottom…

You have seen it work at McDonald’s, you have seen it work on Amazon… and you KNOW it will work for you.

So, you decide to create your first sales funnel…

But after weeks of trial and error…

You ask yourself… WHY did it have to be so hard?

All you wanted to do was to sell your stuff online.

But instead you spent weeks (maybe months) playing with web builders, hiring designers and programmers BFEORE you ever made your first penny online.

And to us… well, that seemed kinda backwards.

Shouldn’t there be an easy way to create high converting marketing funnels, without having to hire an entire staff?

We thought so, and that’s why ClickFunnels was created- a simple way to easily create sales funnels that convert!

Free Images For Marketing and Websites

Finding free images for marketing and websites is one of the challenges I’m often faced with when putting together marketing material or websites, paying for these can cost small fortune!

There is a lot to be said for paying for a licence with iStock, though when you’re starting out that cost is another overhead you probably don’t need…

Here’s a list I put together of royalty free (mostly) images for use in websites or your marketing collateral…

She’s Got An Iron Stomach – Or How I Felt Selling My Business

She’s Got An Iron Stomach – Or How I Felt Selling My Business

Just got back from picking my eldest up from gymnastics, and WOW the circuit training that I saw made my jaw drop…

Incredible, she’s gonna be even fitter than she is already, her stomach is like iron as it is! …

Anyway…. I was thinking about something…

The very first time I got a call asking me if I wanted to sell my business (the first one)…

To be honest I thought is was a wind up, who the hell was this crazy person pranking me?… you’d think the same right?

I laugh now but I was really suspicous at the time and gave him a real grilling on the phone…

Turns out it was all so very real and then my heart starting pumping like crazy!!!!

Not going into the details but DAMN did it feel good, the whole negotiation, the journey, the sale and of course the eventual heap of cash into my bank account…

It was so validating!”

HARD WORK PAYS OFF….

Why am I telling you this?

Well I posted a video about it – yes Car Casting again and I talk about it over on Youtube… me in the car chatting, too much fun, right?

Get on over there and subscribe, but even better than that leave a comment for me…

Hey if you have an idea for me to talk about regarding business or marketing, let me know, love to help you out and succeed, it’s my mantra… you succeed we succeed.

Business Cash Flow : Don’t Spend Before Sales

Business Cash Flow : Don’t Spend Before Sales

What a cool feeling when you’re working on your own business…

One of the best feelings ever, right?

Do you pull all nighters too, like me?

But you gotta be careful, there is a dark side…

It’s all too easy to get your credit card out spending money on things you don’t actually need…

Often it’s hard to know what you do actually need, what will help your business build and grow…

Make no mistakes ” business cash flow” is the main cause of business failure…I’ve been there…

Here are some tips on what you don’t have to spend money on too soon..

An all singing and dancing website with bells and whistles

Stay away from this, unless the website is designed and actively made to achieve sign-ups and rank excellently for search terms don’t waste tens of thousands of dollars on design…

Of course you need a website, but one that converts, KEEP IT SIMPLE.

An office

It’s tempting to think you need an “office” to be a “real” business, but do you really? In this day and age we can work remotely very easily, that’s smart. Meetings can be conducted in swanky hotels or client venues…

Having said that having a barrier between work and home life is essential, so if you do work from home be sure everyone knows your boundaries and your “I’m at work” time…

Don’t invest in physcial locations until you really can step up and afford it, it can be a huge expense on your business…

Glossy artwork and fancy brochures

You’ll get pitched to that you need all this fancy artwork to get going, but you don’t…

Just get some business cards first and go from there…

No kidding I have boxes of old leaflets (THOUSANDS) sitting under my desk never used…

Branded stuff works well once you have disposal cash…

Advertising in magazines and newspapers

I would stay well clear of this until you are generating sales from good solid relationships you have built up…

Instead use Facebook ads or Google ads linked to a cool offer landing page on your website… far better return on investment…

Networking

Yes do this, build relationships, but don’t throw money at events unless there is opportunity to build relationships…

Definitely don’t pay to have a stand at a conference until you have a stunning sales process in place to capture leads… you’ll be disappointed… and waste your money..

Employees

This can catch you out big time… in fact the step from going from a single person to having a team is tricky…

In the short term you can use freelancers, when you feel you are generating enough new business to warrant a new member of staff, then move… BUT NOT UNTIL you are generated those sales…

Cheers for now.

Loading Up The Winter Pipeline With Landing Pages

Loading Up The Winter Pipeline With Landing Pages

So, today I’ve been funnel hacking some webinar scripts.. which I must say I do love…

Don’t know what funnel hacking is?…

It’s buying a product online that is in a niche that you are interested in also selling into and working out their sales funnel… de-engineering it….

It’s a fine activity to do and then of course emulate, and if possible improve…

Only yesterday I was talking to a local client of mine, Danny..

Danny has a small business and wants to load up his pipeline of work through the winter, so I’ve spoken to him about building out a product specific landing page….

Once his awesome landing page about THAT ONE SINGLE product is made (it doesn’t take long) I advised him to get some Google ads pointing to his landing page….

Not sure if you are trying this yourself? It works like a charm…

I’ve used the activity for years, actually more than a decade…probably nearer to two decades!!

Damn that makes me sound old…

Anyway, it goes like this…

Google user enters a specific search term… Danny’s add is displayed.. user clicks on the add.. lands on Danny’s specific ONE SINGLE PRODUCT landing page, and because it’s such a cool offer the user calls Danny… or signs up… or whatever the call to action it…

It’s that simple…

Anyway it’s on my mind a lot right now as I am building out sales funnels for some of my own new products that I’m building towards launch….

As you are a valued subscriber you’re gonna get that news first, and of course I’ll tell you exactly how I am doing it along the way.

That’s it for now, I gotta go and collect my eldest daughter from Gym.

Make Sure Your Website Is Secure With SSL https

Make Sure Your Website Is Secure With SSL https

Last week I told you that Google will start penalising websites that are not SSL compliant….

Well here are two amazing clients of mine that are winners!

Sophi from Cornish Art Gallery took this step and got secure…
Jamie from Cornwall Landscaping & Paving also took this step…

This is from Google itself…

The secure sockets layer (SSL) protocol is used by secure sites to encrypt communication between the server and the user’s browser…

In order for a site to be SSL-compliant, all elements loaded onto the site must also use SSL…

If a non-secure creative is served onto a secure site, it can prompt a warning in the user’s browser, cause ad serving problems or even cause the entire page to be blocked…

As mentioned I can do this work for you, even if you are not a client currently, just ask for a quote – all sites are so very different.

Don’t ignore this, get it done either by me or whoever administers your website(s).

Email me on chris [@] audana.com if I can help.

That’s all for now.

Sound good?
